Lighting is essential to see or do anything. However, it could also consume up to 40% of a building's energy and hasten disintegration from the infrared and ultraviolet rays present in conventional man-made lighting.
Many lighting designes complain of being stymied with the increasing energy conservation restrictions. However, it is possible to create sophisticated and affordable illumination using the most energy efficient product best suited for the particular application.
The new Vango Restaurant just opened in Center City Philadelphia has a 10-foot diameter, 9-foot long chandelier composed of 5,500 glass fibre optics light guides. This fixture has automated colors and lights up the entire room using only 2,050 watts.
The innovation of designing one of the largest chandeliers in Philadelphia is using the most energy efficient lighting technology now known for functional rather than decorative purposes of task, display and architectural features.
The sentiment that "Placing ads and enlisting help from recruiters were not the most desirable ways to fill jobs" is an all too common one. Unfortunately, the nature, behavior and general business practices of some firms in the "recruiting" business only compounds this negative perception.
However, I would counter that there are plenty of hiring managers out there who have had the good fortune of finding a staffing firm that only presents them with the most rigorously qualified, most appropriate, and most immediately hire-able candidates. And, that for a fair fee, this kind of relationship proves to be worth every penny. These kinds of relationships become even more valuable when positions are particularly hard to fill, when time and resources are constrained, and when the staffing firm has a particular technical understanding and recruiting focus that dovetails well with the needs of the hiring organization.
For hiring managers who have not yet had the positive experience I have described above, I welcome the opportunity to serve you.
Sincerely,
Cliff Stevens

Am I a "creative"? I feel pretty darned creative, but my creativity expresses itself in smart tech ideas and clever data analysis. Does that count? I hope so.
There are no real creative sectors in Philly, just a bunch of fake Euro Trash and Wannabe New Yorkers with no talent who couldn't hack it anywhere else.
I find it curious that the Textile Design field is consistently ignored in creative industry forums, despite the fact that Philadelphia has a thriving, albeit small, textile design industry and community, as well as instututes of higher education which include some of the most noted textile design programs in the country.
You speak of "creative industry" under the umbrella of innovation. Do you make a difference between innovation and creativity?

Smart - - really smart thought-provoking insight. thanks!
With such great resources, like Innovation Philadelphia, to help with launching careers, what DOESN'T Philadelphia have to offer!
I grew up in Frankford and attended Mastbaum Tech, I have seen the neighborhood go from great, to good, to o.k., to no way!! Philadelphia needs to redevelop the crime and the psyche of its' residents. I hate visiting my rental property in Kensington. I moved to Atlanta, GA a year ago, best move I ever made. Low crime, great companies, mild weather, creative people, successful and kind people, and the list goes on. Philly is driving away their creative, successful and kind people. I'm GONE for good. Good luck!!
Even though the term "engineering" is used in the study, it seems that the study should only relate to Civil ,Mechanical and Structural engineering , as the study concerns itself with building and construction, as opposed to all types of engineering. I don't see that bioengineering, which is one of the very hot fields, has much to do with architecture.
Hi,
Great article, I really appreciate your knowledge about Software Development, Philadelphia's is a great Creative industry with talented staff I have bookmarked it for it in future if i got a software development work i will definitely only contact to you and forwarded it on.
Cheers.
Peter's advice to young designers about "working for little or no pay" meets with no small amount of disapprobation here. Why must we starve people to learn whether or not they’re hungry?! While creatives can earn a decent living, unlike with medical or legal interns, there is no professional financial “feast” waiting for them in a few years’ time.
Or maybe there is--if they start their own firm and then invite people to work for them for "little or no pay." Plus, it's easier to compete with other design firms and land contracts for less money if you employ indentured servants. What a way to grow a business!
The devaluation of designers’ talent and efforts by other designers is, in my opinion, one of the worst tragedies of the profession. It is a self-destructive circular pattern propagated by its old guard. If we are truly moving into a Creative Economy, then let’s start placing value on our young employees’ contributions to it.
I agree with you..software development continues to grow in popularity as a high value employment industry.

Good to see this overview of what's going on at the grassroots. Happy to help you guys moving forward.
This is a very thought-provoking blog posting. With increasing energy and gas prices, it is imperative for small business-owners to further increase virtual offices and online means of conferencing.
At the University of the Arts, a Center for the Creative Economy has been in the works for the past several months. It's exciting to see Boston embrace this as a citywide initiative, and it will be fascinating to see just what projects and juxtapositions emerge.

Question: Are creativity and innovation one process, or are they two different things requiring two different skill set to make them happen?
Wonderful article - the small changes are both a statement, a mindset, and make real savings.
I'm a student over at penn, and have created a free service to help businesses save paper by avoiding business cards. It's called Dropcard (http://www.mydropcard.com) and it allows people to use their mobile phone to share contact info.
DropCard lets you create a virtual business card that can be quickly emailed to any email address using text messaging.
Just another change to help businesses cut costs and reduce their footprint.

I don't know how to feel about this. It seems odd that a company would refuse to move because they can't put a sign up. However if they do choose to not move to the city, how much damage will that do to Philadelphia? We lose jobs, a certain noteriaty, plus all the revenue of having all those new people in the city - food, services, etc. Do I want a garish Unisys sign in the skyline? No, but there have been other exceptions in the area - namely Aramark, PECO and I think an article mentioned on other exception. I question hardship - Unisys' hardship or Philly's because the company won't move in.
Excellent content - as you always provide and inspires me to come again and again. You are on my RSS reader now so I can read more from you down the road.
its such a good blog thanks for the view
I would add a few other popular photo schools in Philadelphia: University of the Arts and The Art Institute.
What a great idea for the freelancers. But what guarantee that the businesses will come and use them? Surely, good old fashioned sales and marketing would be better placed for them?
There are some amateur internet marketers that think about renting domain names for promoting their sites. Well honestly it’s a bad plan but it also can be a good business idea.
I attended, gleaned many gems of wisdom, and actually made a couple of fundamental changes to my site and new business approach. The breakout groups were especially helpful.

It is always so great to hear about women being successful in the business world. Women have come so far! I just read a great book that covered this very topic...
"The Power of Women United" written by Tina Dezsi and Lia Bandola is a great book that teaches women how to manage a great business while managing other things such as a family.

You have given detailed description about Wister Education Center and Greenhouse. It's great to know that they are using rain water harvesting system and exchanged energy for air condition. It's wonderful over 80% of construction waste was sorted and recycled.

The importance of funding companies at the proof of concept stage and beyond is extremely important. Yet, I hear nothing about the current economic climate's impact on idea-stage entrepreneurs seeking to finance their project via personal resources and family/friends. With so few resources available by anyone outside of required living expenses, it seems to me that the next crater of entrepreneurial darkness that will deepen is the idea-stage development. Traditionally, angel investors have focused on those companies that were able to bootstrap it to the level of "investment-ready." In this new economic climate, either investors will recognize the need to take greater risks with under-developed ideas or risk losing such innovations to the trash heap of unfunded ideas.

I couldn't agree with you more regarding the barriers to adoption of mobile payments. XIPWIRE, taking into account some of the barriers you mentioned above has developed a secure yet simple way of making payments using your cell phone all with a simple text message.
XIPWIRE's approach to security utilizes a a multi-layered approach to guard against unauthorized access and potential fraudulent activity. The first line of defense is at the server and network level where XIPWIRE applies sophisticated software with industrial strength encryption and a series of firewalls to protect the integrity and privacy of the transmitted data. All private data such as passwords, PINs, and account numbers are stored in an encrypted manner.
In the second layer of protection, every transaction that occurs via the XIPWIRE platform whether it is on the cell phone or over the internet generates a text message asking for the user's PIN; alerting the user that a transaction has occurred. If the user did not initiate the transaction, the user has the option to reply with "No" which cancels that transaction. This guarantees that any fraudulent transaction that is attempted cannot be processed without the user's approval.
Finally, to maximize reliability, XIPWIRE does not use a personal cell phone number but instead uses a commercial short code (56624) that has been approved by all of the major cell phone carriers. Not only does this ensure that all text messages from XIPWIRE are legitimate but also that the fidelity and speed of the transactions are optimized. In addition, each text message from XIPWIRE to your mobile phone ends with a unique ID which can be used to to verify the authenticity of the text message received.
Mobile payments using cell phones have now become a reality. Given the importance of security in this space, XIPWIRE's secure platform has the necessary components in place which provide the mobile user confidence to use this convenient and cutting edge technology as part of everyday life.
Which VCs should we reach out to in Philly? We're listening...
Philadelphia has sooo much potential! Great public transportation, very supportive entrepreneur community, extremely diverse city, not too expensive.
Philly's appearance is already in the works thanks to the community's efforts before today. See my blog post from this afternoon for details:
www.blakejennelle.com/.../why-should-you-start-a-company-in-philly-open-thread
With Philadelphia's current business tax structure, how can anybody choose this city to start a business? I moved my business from the city years ago to be able to afford to continue. There may be lots of great organizations and people but that doesn't change how much you have to pay in taxes. Maybe the big companies get a break but for small, entrepreneurial companies there's nothing beneficial.
Noah - Have any specific projects going on?
Al - I'm liking the cheerleader mentality. Keep it up and tell someone outside of Philly how great Philly is.
Blake - Your work on this is great. IP is doing our part to mobilize and organize Philly. Communities need both discussion and action. Great work.
Louise - The tax structure is a consistent topic not only for entrepreneurs, but businesses of all sizes. I know the local Chamber of Commerce is diligent in discussion s to rework the tax structure. More info at www.greaterphilachamber.com/PublicPolicy.aspx. It takes business owners like you to change a city for the better and create a business environment that cultivates small, medium, and large growing businesses.
For everyone - Send us what you wrote to Fast Company. Would love to post and idea share.
