Creative Associations Showcase: Design

8/19/2009, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Thirteen

On Wednesday August 19, 2009, Innovation Philadelphia co-hosted the Creative Associations Showcase: Design with the Center City District SIPS at Thirteen. Nearly 200 people attended to network with design associations, design professionals and fellow creative industry professionals. The associations in attendance included the American Institute of Architects (Philadelphia Chapter), AIGA Philadelphia (American Institute of Graphic Artists), the Philadelphia Area New Media Association (PANMA), and the Industrial Designers Society of America – Philadelphia.  Innovation Philadelphia was thrilled to welcome many associations participating for the first time.  These included the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Philly CHI, and the Usability Professionals’ Association – Delaware Valley Chapter.

Many of the creative professionals, students, and representatives from creative associations commented on the abundance of networking opportunities with people they would otherwise not connect with.  Along with the creative associations, Innovation Philadelphia took the opportunity to announce the Global Creative Economy Convergence Summit, happening this October 5 & 6 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.  Several Summit presenters were in attendance including Nathan Gasser of Rock River Star, a panelist for “Breaking the Cube: Alternative Workspaces,” Chuck Sacco of PhindMe Mobile, presenting a Pecha Kucha on “The 7th Mass Media,” and a panelist for “The ABCs of Mobile Technology,” Mike Worth of Game Music Inc. and Hardik Bhatt, panelists for “Playing for Dollars: The Growing of a Video Game Industry.”

In addition to attracting attendees from the Greater Philadelphia Region, one attendee traveled from as far away as Westchester County, N.Y.  Chris Novell said, “I am in the process of establishing my niche in the Usability field. The Philly SIPS event sounded as if it would be a good opportunity for meeting and learning. As a result of my excursion I received a helpful idea for my business card, steered someone toward an exciting website and had great carpool conversation.” Nathan Gasser said, “It says something about the quality of our community that she'd make the drive just for the event.”

Center City SIPS happy hours continue through the rest of the summer until August 30, 2009.  For more opportunities to network, learn, and discuss the latest innovative ideas in emerging technologies, design, and programs that support creative economy development, register for the Global Creative Economy Convergence Summit at www.GCECS2009.com.  Whether you are an entrepreneur, a graphic or web designer, business leader, or something in between, there is sure to be something for everyone with more than 90 speakers scheduled for this year’s event.  With a variety of panels and workshops, and keynote speakers such as Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert and social media guru Peter Shankman, the Summit is bringing together the best of the best from an assortment of creative industries to network, exchange ideas, and share information.
